Hanukkah Blessing and Songs

Candles are added to the menorah from right to left
and kindled from left to right.
On Shabbat, light the menorah before the Shabbat candles.
On Motza’ei Shabbat (Saturday night) do Havdalah
before lighting the menorah.

Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech Ha’olam, asher kid’shanu bmitzvotav
v’tzivanu l’hadlik ner shel Chanukah.
Blessed are You, Eternal our God, Sovereign of the Universe,
Who has sanctified us with Your mitzvot,
and commanded us to kindle the Chanukah lights.

Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech Ha’olam, she’asah nisim la’avoteinu
bayim hahem baz’man hazeh.
Blessed are You, Eternal our God, Sovereign of the Universe,
Who did wondrous things for our ancestors in days of old at this season.

First night only:

Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech Ha’olam,
shehecheyanu, v’kiy’manu, v’higiyanu laz’man hazeh.
Blessed are You, Eternal God, Sovereign of the universe,
Who has given us life, and sustained us, and enabled us to reach this season.

After the candle blessing, say the following:

We kindle these lights on account of the miracles, the deliverances and the wonders which You performed for our ancestors, at this time in those days. During all the eight days of Chanukah these lights are sacred. We are not permitted to make any use of them except to look upon them, that we may give thanks for Your miracles, deliverances and wonders.

Maoz Tzur – Rock of Ages

Ma-oz tzur y’shu-a-ti, l’cha na-eh l’sha-bei-ach,
ti-kon beit t’fi-la-ti v’sham to-da n’za-bei-ach.
L’eit ta-chin mat-bei-ach mi-tzar hak-m’na-bei-ach,
az eg-mor, be’shir miz-mor, cha-nu-kat ha-miz-bei-ach.

Rock of ages, let our song praise Your saving power;
You, amid the raging foes, were our sheltering tower.
Furious, they assailed us, but Your arm availed us,
And Your word broke their sword when our own strength failed us.

Children of the Maccabees, whether free or fettered,
Wake the echoes of the songs where you may be scattered.
Yours the message cheering that the time is nearing,
Which will see all go free, tyrants disappearing.

And then, sing all those other great Chanukah songs….!
